Sometimes I make up stories about what my dogs smell on our walks. There is an interesting drama unfolding for them through their noses to which I am not privy.
Maybe there is a message from the dog down the block that tells them the latest doggie gossip. The neighborhood dogs and stray cats seem to leave their messages in the same spots along our route.
At least once on every walk, Amore gets a whiff of something that excites him so much that he can hardly contain himself and I can hardly contain him.
Less often, he smells something that invites him to do more than sniff. There is a secret, but joyous message, that takes him down to the grass.
The message must only be for him because Duke never rolls in the grass on our walks. These messages make Amore lose himself in ecstasy as he dives down, nose first, to smear it all over him. There is little warning from my side of the leash that he is going down.
He rolls it happily all over his body until I make him get up to keep walking.
This picture was taken before he had his cancer removed and before he had his heart issues, but I imagine he will find another blissful message any day now.
I thought “Roll with it!” made sense for all of us as we head into the first of many hectic holiday weeks ahead. We are all likely to get caught up in some family drama as it unfolds, or to become overwhelmed with the expectations the holidays often create.
I say we roll with whatever the holidays throw at us. I might even roll in whatever craziness unfolds because I am grateful to be spending time with my family and friends. Not everyone is so lucky this year, and we might not be so fortunate next year.
Roll in the blessings. Roll with the crap that doesn’t really matter anyway.
